Donald E. “Don” White, age 98, of Hopedale, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at Trinity Medical Center West, Steubenville with his daughter by his side.

Born July 7, 1925, in Scio, he was a son of the late David White and Lola Wagner White. He attended schools in Unionport, Blue Ridge, Germano and Jewett prior to joining the Army during WWII. He honorably served his country in seven countries in the European Theatre from 1943-1946. When he returned from the war he met the love of his life, Mary, in Canfield, Ohio. They moved to Harrison County where he worked for 33 years in the coal mines, first at North Americans Jensie Mine in East Springfield then at Nelms #2 Mine in Hopedale.

Don was a member of the UMWA Local 1304 and the Salem VFW Post 892. He was an excellent carpenter who helped build his own home. After retiring he kept active and built porch swings, wishing wells and flower baskets. Don and Mary enjoyed weekly Euchre card games with family and friends. He enjoyed life and was quite ornery, always offering to share his “bubble gum”.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mary Alice Paulin White; a daughter and son-in-law Karen and Jim Reed, a brother Dean White and sisters Mildred Himmelspauch, Dorothy Lenkey, Fay McAfee and Frances Thompson.

Surviving is a son David White of Steubenville, his devoted daughter and caregiver Pam (Wayne) Dulkoski of Germano, grandchildren Jim Reed, Jr of Cadiz, Dan (Frankie) Dulkoski of Hopedale and Steph (Bud) Risdon of Mingo Junction, great grandchildren Hannah and Isaac Dulkoski and Miranda and Paige Risdon, a great-great granddaughter Ellie Risdon and sisters Jean “Ginger” Howell and JoAnne McAfee.

The family would like to thank the staff at Trinity Medical Center West and Gables Care Center for their excellent care.
