IMG_8598NEW ATHENS – Fire and rescue departments from Harrisville, New Athens, Flushing, Cumberland Trail, Lafferty and Cadiz rushed to extinguish a brush fire late Tuesday afternoon that eventually spread to Bob Dumbroski’s barn.

Dumbroski said it started with a simple bag of garbage he was burning and with the strong winds it eventually caught up to his barn burning it to the ground.

Dark smoke could be seen from a distance as it began spreading to the next property, according to personnel on the scene.

The fire took place just on the Harrison and Belmont County lines just off Ohio 9 where the smoke could be seen even before entering New Athens if coming from Cadiz.

The strong winds were contributing to small flames that could still be seen well after the fire had been brought under control a little before 6 p.m.
