obit Whinnery Katherine picKatherine Furbee Whinnery 99, of Adena, went to be with the Lord Saturday Jan. 24, at Liza’s Place, Valley Hospice South, Wheeling, W.Va. She was born April 25, 1915 in Martins Ferry, the daughter of the late John N. and M. Agnes (Baiker) Furbee. Katherine was a retired Associate Professor at The Ohio State University. She was also a member of Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder. She was on numerous committees of the Upper Ohio Valley Presbytery, and served as president of the Presbyterian Women.

Katherine was a 1933 graduate of St. Clairsville High School, after which she began her long, productive career in the OSU Cooperative Extension Service. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree with Honors in Home Economics from The Ohio State University in three years and later in life earned a Master of Science Degree in Family Life Education.

Katherine served as the OSU Extension Home Economist for Harrison County from 1962 to 1984. Prior to her service there, she was employed as a Home Economics Instructor at Dillonvale High School. In 1960 she taught at the new Union Local High School in Morristown, where she set up their Home Economics Department and established curriculum.

Katherine continued serving others as a member of the Community Mental Health Services Board of Directors, with many years as board president. She served on the board of directors for the Ohio University Eastern campus, establishing the Whinnery Family Scholarship for high school graduates from Harrison County. Her commitment to 4-H youth education fostered the development and growth of  many young people in rural Harrison County. Katherine also established Homemaker Clubs as part of her commitment to women’s education and community involvement, which provided an avenue for local participation in the planning and establishment of Harrison Community Hospital.  Beyond her local commitment, Katherine held membership in The Associated Country Women of the World and experienced a number of rural cultures in other countries.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Francis Jesse Whinnery in 1957 and  brothers Austin C. Furbee, and Jack D. Furbee.  Katherine is survived by her six children John T. (Gerry) Whinnery of  Delaware, Ohio;  Karen S. (Joseph) Borst of  St. Mary’s Ohio;  Eleanor L. (Geoffrey) Henrietta of  Louisa, Virginia;  Joseph A. (Karen) Whinnery of  Philomath, Oregon;  Robert B. (Vickie) Whinnery of Adena;  Russell B. (Debra) Whinnery of Colerain; eleven grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Wilson Funeral Home 154 Second St., Dillonvale on Friday Jan. 30, from 2 to 9 pm. And then on Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of service at noon at the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, Mt. Pleasant. Rev. Dr. M. Lorraine Dill, Rev. Byron McElroy, and Rev. Lloyd Smith officiating. Interment in Highland Cemetery, Mt.
