Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formally known as Decoration Day and commemorates all men and women, who have died in military service for the United States. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day and it is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season.
Below is a list of some of the events scheduled to take place in the area honoring, and remembering, these members of our military who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

BOWERSTON – Memorial Day Services May 27, 10:30 a.m. at Gateway Memorial Park, with special speaker Karl Henry, music provided by Troy Akins of Military Hymns, with Palmer Love doing the honor of raising the American flag.

DEERSVILLE – Memorial Service, May 27, 11 a.m. Patterson Union Cemetery, Civil War Plat. The Deersville United Methodist Church will host a luncheon on Monday, May 27, immediately following the Memorial Day Service at Patterson Union Cemetery. Veterans, their family and friends are welcome to the church Fellowship Hall for refreshments and a time of fellowship.

FAIRVIEW CEMETERY, May 27, 11 a.m. The main speaker this year will be Robert Hirschbach (Vietnam Veteran of the U.S. Army). Germano Cemetery service will follow approximately at noon.

FEED SPRING CHURCH will honor area military during a special Worship Service Sunday May 26, 10:30 a.m. A table of memorial will be provided for special pictures of those who have gone on before us and special memories will be shared by individuals about their life in the Service. Pastor Milo Baker will be speaking. At the close of the service the folks will gather on the lawn of the church for taps and a silent prayer.

FREEPORT – Memorial Day Services will be held at Freeport Greenmont Union Cemetery Sunday May 26. Pastor Dave Koch will be the speaker to honor living servicemen and women and fallen soldiers of all wars.

GERMANO – follows Fairview approximately 12 p.m.

HOPEDALE – The Hopedale American Legion Post 682 will host a rededication of the Memorial Wall at its facility on Rabbit Road on May 25. Members will also conduct ceremonies at five area cemeteries before holding a ceremony at the Legion headquarters at 1:30 p.m. on Monday. The Hopedale Memorial Day Parade is May 27 at noon. The parade begins at the firehouse, proceeds down Main Street onto High Street and ends at the Hopedale Cemetery where services will be held. Participants are welcome! LEESVILLE UMC Memorial Day Celebration will be held on Sunday, May 26 at 9 a.m. with a special worship service to honor America’s veterans. The singing group The Faithful Four will provide music. A lunch will follow.

SCIO – The Scio American Legion Post 482 will hold a parade at 9 a.m. on Monday and march to the Scio Cemetery for a ceremony at 10 a.m. followed by a ceremony at the Legion on Crimm Road with the tossing of a wreath into the pond. A free breakfast will also be held there, followed by ceremonies at cemeteries in Conotton and near Bowerston. Members will also attend a church service at Scio UMC.

UNIONPORT – Monday, May 27, parade 10 a.m. (forms at 9:30), gun salute 10:45 a.m., Unionport Cemetery, program at 11 a.m. in Unionport Christian Church with Pastor Chuck Mehl speaker. Additional activities included a breakfast at 7 a.m.-noon in the community center (old Unionport school), by donation; lunch noon-2 p.m. also in the community center.
