DOVER – Being a hero knows no age boundaries, as young people made an impact this past year with impressive acts of courage. The Muskingum Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross honored such heroes in front of more than 200 family members, friends and other members of the community at the Hometown Hero Awards Dinner, last Thursday at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center.

“Our honorees may not think of themselves as heroes; however, we know they are ordinary people who have performed extraordinary acts,” said Chad Conrad, executive director of the Muskingum Lakes Chapter. “Each honoree exemplifies the values and principles that are at the core of the American Red Cross mission.”

Harrison County Heroes recognized pictured above are left to right, Chief Ron Carter of Cadiz, John Clark and Todd Walker, both of Jewett. This is a general account of events that unfolded, and the exceptional actions performed by these outstanding local honorees.
Baby Izaiah was at his Grandpa John Clark’s home when he stopped breathing while sleeping last Easter day. Izaiah had no heartbeat and was turning blue, and Clark quickly laid him on a bed opened his airway. Utilizing first aid skills he’d learned in the Army, Clark started to perform infant CPR. The baby’s heartbeat was unnoticeable and his lips became black, gray and purple. At this point, Izaiah had died and been revived three times within minutes.

Izaiah’s mother called 9-1-1, and Jewett Police Chief Ron Carter and Officer Todd Walker quickly came to their aid. Until the emergency squad arrived, Carter continued CPR while Officer Walker stimulated blood circulation by the baby’s legs and feet. Izaiah gasped for air then stopped breathing once more until the officers finally fully revived him.
By the time they put Izaiah into the ambulance, he was smiling at everyone. The quick attention of his family, and the police officers who sustained his life while the squad was on its way, averted a tragedy.
