MSG boxes

CADIZ – Local soldiers abroad are getting a taste of home after the Harrison County Military Support Group and other volunteers gathered to play Santa on Tuesday.
Roughly 40 people, including group members, military families and youngsters converged upon the Cadiz Fire Station to pack boxes full of goodies for 15 area military members.

Group co-founder Terry Stewart said about 45 boxes would be filled, with one large and two medium containers each going to one soldier. Veteran volunteers were paired with novice youth, including members of the Helping Hands Youth Group from Jewett United Methodist Church and the Liberty Trails 4-H Club, to fill boxes with candy, snacks, toiletries, cards and seasonal items to brighten the holiday. Stewart added that more than 100 dozen cookies were donated by caring community members.

“We’ve had so many generous people helping,” he continued.

And all of their efforts have not gone unnoticed. Since the group began nearly a decade ago, dozens of boxes have headed overseas to servicemen and women in all branches of the military, and they have responded in kind with thank-you letters and flags flown during missions.
