The burning of wooden pallets outside Scio Pottery were cited for a five-alarm blaze in one of the company’s older buildings shortly before noon on Tuesday. Crews from Scio, Jewett, Cadiz, Uhrichsville, Loudon Township, Perry Township, Hopedale and throughout the area responded and had it under control within a half-hour, but officials remained on-scene for several hours braving the heat to extinguish hotspots.
Jewett Fire Chief Dennis Kovarik said employees were apparently burning the pallets when the dry roof was ignited. The building was previously set for demolition but is just feet from the production area where the company prepares cement. About 20 employees were sent home and co-owner Steve Reese said work would resume when power was restored. Fire crews used hooks and pressurized water to take down the smoking structure.
