CADIZ – The Harrison County 4-H Horse Committee needs your help to complete a long overdue project. The committee is working to raise the funds to replace the dilapidated horse arena at the county fairgrounds with a new, larger vinyl arena. “This is a big undertaking,” states Laynette Shively, chair of the committee. “We have to get the old arena dismantled, excavation completed and the new fencing material up in time for the ground to settle before the kids start their pre-fair workouts.”

The project is expected to cost approximately $7,000 and the money is being raised by the committee members, parents and 4-H horse project kids. “Everyone is working hard to seek donations and sponsors,” states Sherri VanTassel of Barrister Farm. Barrister Farm is sponsoring the raffle of a trip for two to the Ohio State Fair including two VIP tickets to your choice of various concerts, overnight accommodations, two meal tickets to the private dining room, a $25 gas card, and four SkyRide tickets. Only 150 tickets are being sold and the proceeds go towards the arena project. The Ohio State Fair package raffle tickets are $20 each and the package is valued at $200 – $250 depending on which concert is chosen by the winner.

“Everyone who sees this article can do something to help – buy a raffle ticket for the Ohio State Fair package, make a donation in any amount, or be a sponsor at $100, $250, $500, or $1,000 and get your name displayed on the new vinyl fence” explains Shively. Donations can also be made “in honor” or “in memory” of someone special – a great way to carry a legacy forward. Donations and sponsorships are tax deductible. “People see things that need done and complain about it but now is the time for action,” noted Vanessa Birney, committee member and 4-H club advisor. “4-H is about safety and education,” states Heather Smith, committee member and advisor, “kids with horse projects don’t sell their animals at the end of the fair. They have a year-long and often life-long relationship with their four legged partners and this project is a way to recognize the kids’ commitment to their horses.”

For information on the raffle tickets for the Ohio State Fair package, including which concerts are included, contact Sherri VanTassel at 740-546-4706. The drawing on the raffle tickets will be April 9, 2012 at the 4-H Horse Committee meeting. Donations and sponsorships can be made payable to Harrison County 4-H Treasurer and please be sure to put Horse Committee on the memo line. Checks get mailed to Harrison County 4-H Committee, 538 North Main Street – Suite H, Cadiz, OH  43907. Please contact Laynette Shively at 740-922-1182 with any questions.
