Gables Care Center in Hopedale went to Pittsburgh on Sept. 8, along with sister facility Carriage Inn of Cadiz, for a cruise on the Majestic. Sharing and Caring, Inc. sponsored the event to honor disabled veterans from hospitals and nursing homes in the area.  Meeting the group in the parking area were local firefighters who escorted the wheelchairs to the dock.

A local high school band performed at the dock, while the Salvation Army provided coffee and donuts, as the Vets arrived. As the boat left the dock, the men and women were encouraged to participate in a dance contest, and a jazz band entertained.

After a delicious lunch was served, “Cher” performed, and the men really enjoyed her. As they were departing each veteran received a duffle bag filled with shirts, hats, socks and personal hygiene products. Activity Director of Carriage Inn of Cadiz, Barbie Elliot invited the group from Gables to go along this year, and the group traveled in their new van.

Pictured enjoying the day are Gables’ Activity Aide (left), Amy Norris with her father, Laban Blackburn; Activity Director, Marilyn Thompson with resident Tom Pahides, who happened to have won third place in the dance contest.
