The Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services has announced Tri-County Help Center, Inc. as a recipient of the Family Violence Prevention and Services Program (FVPS) Grant for the year 2011-2012. The FVPS grant’s goal is to prevent incidents of family violence and provide immediate shelter and related assistance for family violence victims and dependants. Tri-County Help Center, Inc. will use these grant monies to assist and support Peg’s House, an emergency residential shelter for persons in our tri-county area who are victims of family violence and their dependants, Peg’s House serves Belmont, Harrison and Monroe Counties and is owned and operated by Tri-County Help Center, Inc.

Cathy Campbell, Executive Director of Tri-County Help Center, Inc., reports that nationally one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime and an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year. Locally, recent statistics from the Ohio Family Violence Prevention Project state that between 700 and 1200 adults residing in Belmont, Harrison and Monroe counties are physically abused by a current for former intimate partner each year. Further, studies show that women and children are at the greatest risk for severe injury and death when they attempt to leave their abusive partners (Institute of Public Policy, University of Missouri).  “Safe shelters can be a lifesaving factor for victims of family violence and their children,” said Ms. Campbell.

The FVPS grant will allow Peg’s House to continue to be fully staffed by shelter managers who are trained crisis intervention specialist able to provide these lifesaving services. Shelter managers, supervised by Kay Hawkenberry, Shelter Manager Coordinator, truly care and give hope to every adult and child they serve whose lives have been touched by family violence.
