CADIZ – For the second time in recent weeks, mine safety rescue units converged upon Cadiz to test their skills in dangerous situations.

Twelve teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia met for the Fourth Annual Ohio Mine Safety Competition at the Jerry L. Stewart Mine Safety Training Center on June 22. The event, which was sponsored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, included teams from Rosebud Mining Co. of Ohio and Pennsylvania, Ohio Valley Coal Company, Hopedale Mining LLC, Buckingham Coal Co., Alliance Coal Co. of West Virginia, Gatling Coal LLC, Sterling Mine Corp. and American Energy Corp. Crews were put on the hot seat during the daylong activities and completed timed field, smoke and bench tests that were judged for accuracy.

The Hopedale Mine Rescue Team pictured above, earned several awards during the competition. The team, which won the mine rescue contest last year, earned second place for the smoke competition and third in the field contest. More about the competition can be found in this weeks print edition of the Harrison News-Herald.
