NEW PHILADELPHIA – With summer activities just around the corner it is time to prepare for the swimming season. As a recognized leader in swimming and lifeguard training, the Muskingum Lakes Chapter of the Red Cross is set to begin Learn to Swim and Water Safety registration Monday May 2 at the Red Cross office from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Learn to Swim sessions will run from July 5 – 15, July 18 – 29, and August 1 – 12 at Tuscora Park Pool. The cost is $20.00 per student, per session.

The Learn to Swim program is a two week program designed to help children, ages 5 and older, improve their swimming skills and the confidence they have in themselves. “The chapters end result of this program is to save lives by teaching children and young adults how to be prepared in, on and around the water,” says Health and Safety Director Debbie Swegheimer.

As part of this program, the chapter will be offering Guard Start, which is designed for children 13 and 14 years of age that have an interest in future lifeguard training. Guard Start will be held from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. during the second and third sessions only.

The Lifeguarding course is set to be held Monday thru Saturday, June 6 -18 at Tuscora Park Pool from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. To enroll you must be at least 15 years of age before the last scheduled class session and pass the skills evaluation, which will take place on the first water day of class.

The chapter is always in need of instructor aides to assist with these lessons. Training is available through the chapter to anyone interested in volunteering.
