JEWETT – As a youngster growing up in Hopedale, John “Bugs” Vargo loved to play in the outdoors. By age six, his father had taught him some trapping basics, and John was earning some spending money as he trapped rabbits for then mayor, Mr. Skeen. Trapping continues to be a large part of John’s life, but his other, lesser known, passion in life is archaeology.

Vargo has excavated over 20 sites in the state of Ohio, with 13 of them being right here in Harrison County. His biggest site accomplishment seems to be the Mattie Stewart site, located off of US 250 across from the County Home. More about Vargo’s archaeological and rare artifact discoveries are featured in this weeks print edition of the Harrison News-Herald.
