Communities will reflect upon the meaning of freedom as they recall military members of past and present during this year’s Memorial Day festivities. The following is a lineup of area events:

ADENA – Memorial Day Services conducted by the Adena American Legion, Post 525, will be held Friday, May 28, 2010 at 1:15 p.m. at West Elementary School in Adena, Ohio. The Memorial Day Service will be held by the school children and the Adena American Legion. All parents, families and the public are urged to attend. The Guest Speaker is Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla. Also, a service will be held, immediately following the service at West Elementary School, at Sunset Health Care, U.S. 250, Harrisville. Monday, May 31, at 9 a.m. the Memorial Day program will begin with a Community Ecumenical Memorial Service held at St. Casimir Church, Hanna Avenue, Adena. Fallen soldiers will be remembered with a roll call of those killed in action and the poppy presentation. Following church service on Monday, the parade will line up on Hanna Avenue at the Legion home and begin. After the parade a service will take place at the Legion Memorial. The guest Speaker is evangelist Jack Ernest.   Monday, May 31 starting at noon in Harrisville, a parade will be held and conclude at Olive Branch Cemetery, Harrisville, for a Memorial Day service with Guest Speaker Evangelist, Jack Ernest. The members of the American Legion, Post 525 of Adena, hope all Veterans, families and organizations will spend a few hours with us to remember those who have died for their country, so we can enjoy the freedom that we have today. Your participation in the Memorial Day Services and Parades would be appreciated.

CADIZ – The Cadiz American Legion Post 34 will meet at the village square at 11 a.m. and walk to Cadiz Union Cemetery for services.

DEERSVILLE – Veterans Memorial Day at Deersville will be May 31 at 11 a.m. This year the wreath will be in memory of Gene Hatcher. The men and women will post flags at two cemeteries in Deersville on Friday, May 28 and in Franklin, Stock, Washington and Nottingham Townships. The total will be 325 this year. The annual volunteer firemen’s fair will be held Friday, May 28. The fish fry will begin at 4 p.m., parade line up at 5:30, parade starts at 6:30 p.m. Cornhole tournament sign ups at 7:30 p.m., tournament starts at 8 p.m. DJ and karaoke at 7 p.m., crowning of Royalty at 7:30 p.m. and a benefit auction at 8 p.m.

FREEPORT – The Freeport VFW will hold services on May 30, 11 a.m. at Mt. Carmel, 1 p.m. at Greenmont Cemetery, and 2 p.m. at Moorefield. Volunteers who would like to help fill poppies on Friday, May 28, may call Mike Wilden 658-3721.

HOPEDALE – American Legion Post 682 will conduct services at Beech Springs Cemetery at 10 a.m., Blue Ridge Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. and Greenwood Cemetery at 11 a.m., with a ceremony at the post headquarters around 1 p.m.

JEWETT – The Jewett VFW Post 3072 will be holding Memorial Day Services at the Fairview Cemetery in Jewett at 11 a.m. and the Germano cemetery at 11:45 a.m.

SCIO – The Community Memorial Day Service will be held at the Scio United Methodist Church on May 29 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Visser bringing the morning message.

NEW ATHENS – Memorial Day Service, May 31, 9:30 a.m. (Note time), Longview Cemetery in New Athens.

UNIONPORT – Memorial Day Parade at 10 a.m., 10:45 a.m. there will be a gun salute in the cemetery, program in the Christian Church at 11 a.m. and a donation only pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. in the community center.
